Labour Management (Industrial Relations)

This course provides a strong framework of knowledge to help participants gain a clear understanding of the relationship between management and labor organisations and aims to equip participants with a clear perspective of industrial relations and collective bargaining. Participants would be briefed on the various Labour Laws of Trinidad and Tobago and the various processes to settle unresolved disputes and other matters which arise between employers and trade unions. Participants would gain knowledge not just related to the evolution of labor-management relations, but also about why maintaining a resilient, productive working bond between labor and management is mutually advantageous to all parties. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 

Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 

  • Discuss various acts and agencies related to the relationship between labour and management 
  • Classify unfair labour practices as initiated by an employer or a labour organization 
  • Discuss the collective bargaining process, including negotiations, outcomes, and memorandums of understanding 
  • Discuss the labour laws of Trinidad and Tobago: 
  • Industrial Relations Act 
  • The Industrial Relations (Amendment) Bill, 2015 
  • Maternity Protection Act  
  • Minimum Wages Act 
  • Occupational Safety and Health Act      
  • Retrenchment and Severance Benefits Act 
  • Describe how labour relations units, supervisors, and union representatives administer a collective bargaining agreement 
  • Explain how a grievance is generated and processed 
  • Compare performance-related, conduct-related, unfair labour practice, and miscellaneous grievances 
  • Describe various alternative dispute resolution techniques and the appeals process
