COURSE OVERVIEW

This course will provide a foundational understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Geriatric Care Provider.  It will emphasize the importance of the care giver in the private residence and the importance of being able to liaise with the Primary Care Provider.  It will provide a basic understanding of medicines and their application sites along with possible side effects.

COURSE AIMS

• Give participants an understanding of the role and function of a Geriatric Nurse
• Develop observation and basic diagnostic skills in potential nurses
• Emphasize the legal and ethical responsibilities the position carries with it.
• Give participants an understanding of basic medical terminology and give them the ability to use these terms in a professional setting.
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of the psychosocial aspects of the aged mind and its comorbidities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

1. Maintain knowledge and skill in the care and treatment of the older adult.
2. List the common geriatric syndromes and conditions, including risk factors, causes, signs, symptoms, differential diagnoses, treatments and preventive strategies.
3. Recognize one’s own and others’ attitudes, values, and expectations about aging and their impact on care of older adults and their families.
4. Adopt the concept of individualized care as the standard of practice with older adults.
5. Communicate effectively, respectfully, and compassionately with older adults and their families.
6. Be able to identify the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia and adjust treatment accordingly.
7. Be aware of the legal and ethical responsibilities of a care giver and be willing to act in accordance with same.
8. Be physically and mentally capable of dealing with a dead or dying patient.
